The role of the environmental sustainability is no longer a feel-good marketing exercise but is rapidly becoming a compelling corporate ‘license to operate’ issue.
The eBMS EMS (Environmental Management System) can assist senior environmental & sustainability managers to achieve aggressive environmental targets.
The decentralisation of the HR & environmental departments within large to medium sized organisations has provided some difficult challenges.
Challenge 1 - How does the company cope with its existing resources and waste?
Challenge 2 - How prepared are middle management to take on the burden of new environmental responsibilities?
Challenge 3 - How can the change be managed effectively?
Challenge 4 - What processes and systems can be adopted to maintain environmental performance and to communicate issues effectively?
Every company that has undergone significant change would reluctantly admit that the implementation and impact of those changes encourages reactive behaviour.
The Australian Government recently has released new audit requirements to dramatically improve the nations environmental sustainability standards.
Some of the active programs that have been implemented by the government are;
- NGER - National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007
- EEO - Energy Efficiency Opportunity Reporting
- CPRS - Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme
- Industry specific requirements (Energy, Transport)
If you are a member from senior management, business improvement, human resources or the environmental department and you are not familiar with the above schemes then we highly recommend you visit our environmental reporting schemes page.
Imagine a system that empowered any user to:
- Meet and exceed environmental compliance reporting
- Reduce time spent on environmental issues
- Locate any company URL or document immediately
- Identify corrective actions for environmental sustainability
- Strategically map environmental issues
- Obtain environmental targets per site
- Configure analysis for energy, greenhouse emissions, water & waster management plus many other areas
- Manage, improve, automate workflow activities effectively
- Capture and store data effectively with minimal paper waste
- Align our current template system to suit your exact business requirements with our eForm Designer to help realise environmental savings
Would such a system allow companies to create an environment for change to control costs and to improve motivation? eBMS can provide a hosted single channel or company wide solution.

Environmental Reporting
The Australian Governement recently has released new audit requirements to dramatically improve the nations environmental sustainability standards.
These new innitiatives will force medium to large sized businesses with larger energy usage and carbon footprints to follow strict reporting & record keeping proceedures. It has also been announced that failure to meet these requirements will result in large fines along with other types of heavy penalties.
Some of the active programs that have been implemented by the government are;
- NGER - National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007
- EEO - Energy Efficiency Opportunity Reporting
- CPRS - Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme
- Industry specific requirements (Energy, Transport)
Who does this affect?
- NGER Act requires all companies that emit 25kt of greenhouse gases OR consume 100TJ of energy to have registered and report by 31 August 2009.
- Duty of care requirement on all CEO’s to calculate their businesses carbon footprint. CEO’s can be personally liable up to $250,000 if they do not comply.
- The CPRS works hand in hand with NGER. The proposed CPRS will create a market where heavy polluters will be require to buy carbon credits to offset their emissions.
- Management Reporting - Emissions and reduction projects require regular monitoring. Balanced scorecard approach to reporting
How will this impact on Businesses?
- Technical Environmental emissions assessment required now
- Emission reduction projects to be identified
- Legal – compliance with law (which facilities and legal structures are obliged to report)
- External accounting/reporting;
- Assessment of asset impairment and disclosures required in Statutory Accounts?
- Future Carbon Trading systems brought to account
- Taxation Implications - Tax implications of Carbon Trading
- Audit Requirements – External Data requires independent verification
- Commercial Strategy – CPRS will shift the input costs. Selling prices to reflect new cost base
- Strategy – Emissions taken into account for all strategic and investment decisions.
Data capture and Reporting Systems Implications
Robust and fully integrated Environmental Management Systems will be required by all businesses for reporting and risk management requirements.
Key features of any system should include;
- Capture of all data
- Full integration with large ERP and back end systems
- Full balanced scorecard reporting, combining Financial,
Environmental and Social KPI’s
- Data interface capabilities with OSCAR, the government
reporting tool
- Ability to modify easily as future OSCAR requirements
change (see below) and to accommodate Global Reporting
Initiatives (GRI)
